Scrubs is back: ABC's revival premiered on 25 February 2026, and season 2 started on 30 September 2026. On TV, scrub colors are a costume choice. In real hospitals they are set by the employer, and in parts of the UK by a national role-based scheme, while the fabric has largely moved to polyester, rayon and spandex blends.
This explainer covers the revival's dates and then what real scrubs look like in October 2026. We don't analyze the show's costumes, because we found no published source describing them.

Do scrub colors mean anything in real hospitals?
Often, yes, but there is no universal code. A color that means "nurse" at one hospital can mean "respiratory therapist" or "student" at another. On a TV set, costume designers choose colors for the camera and the characters. Real employers choose them so that patients and colleagues can tell roles apart.
We found no national color standard for scrubs in the US. The UK is different: NHS England and NHS Scotland each have a national uniform with role-based colors, though adoption and local variations are up to each employer.
What color scrubs do nurses wear in US hospitals?
Each hospital or health system sets its own program. One published example is Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania. Its role-specific dress code, marked "Updated 4/28/17", sets these colors:
| Role | Color (LVHN, 2017) |
|---|---|
| Registered nurse | Solid navy top and bottoms, white embroidery |
| Technical partner / certified nursing assistant | Royal blue top, royal blue or white pants |
| Patient observation assistant | Burgundy top, black or khaki pants |
| Respiratory therapy | Charcoal gray top and pants |
| Administrative partner | Solid black top and pants |
| Mental health technician | No color required |
The same document gives exceptions for one emergency department, where nursing assistants wear Caribbean blue and administrative staff wear chocolate brown. It does not explain why each color was chosen. This is 2017 data from one network; it may have changed, and it says nothing about other hospitals. If you are starting a new job, ask for your own employer's dress code. Our guide on what color scrubs nursing students wear covers the student side.
What does the NHS national uniform look like?
NHS England's national healthcare uniform pairs a base color with a contrast trim, by role. Trusts decide whether and when to adopt it. A selection from the NHS Supply Chain colourway sheet, using the color names as published:
| Role | Base | Trim |
|---|---|---|
| Nurse | Hospital blue | Navy |
| Nursing associate | Sky blue | Sky blue |
| Matron | Purple | Navy |
| Team leader | Navy | Dark red |
| Midwife | Postman blue | Navy |
| Students | Cloud blue | Navy |
| HCA or support worker | Lilac | Navy |
| Physiotherapist | White | Navy |
| Pharmacist | Bottle green | Navy |
The sheet itself warns that on-screen colors may differ slightly from the real fabric. Some trusts vary from it, so check locally. The full list, including every allied health profession, is in our NHS uniform colours guide.
NHS Scotland has its own scheme under DL(2018)4. For example, registered nurses wear cornflower blue, senior charge nurses navy, healthcare support workers pale sky blue and students silver-grey, all with navy trousers.
What are scrubs made of now?
Most current styles we checked are synthetic blends. Polyester, rayon and spandex in different proportions are the most common mix, with some cotton-rich exceptions. Compositions as listed on brand or retailer pages on 23 October 2026:
| Brand and style | Composition | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FIGS (FIONx fabric) | 72% polyester, 21% rayon, 7% spandex | Reseller help page |
| Grey's Anatomy by Barco, Kim top | 74% polyester, 23% rayon, 3% spandex | Greek retailer |
| Healing Hands Purple Label 2167 Jane top | 77% polyester, 20% rayon, 3% spandex | Australian retailer |
| Jaanuu W30003 | 65% rayon, 30% nylon, 5% spandex | Reseller |
| Dickies 81906 men's top | 55% cotton, 45% polyester | Greek retailer |
Care labels differ too. The Kim top is listed as washable at 30°C, the FIGS fabric page says wash cold, and the Dickies top is listed at 60°C. That matters for UK staff, because NHS guidance says to wash at the hottest temperature the fabric allows. Our fabric blends guide explains what each fiber does.
Some brands also add antimicrobial finishes. Whether they reduce contamination on shift is a separate question, covered in do antimicrobial scrubs work.
One naming note: Barco sells a scrub line under the Grey's Anatomy name, which is also the title of a different ABC hospital drama. We use brand names only to identify products; we are not affiliated with any brand or with ABC.
TV scrubs vs real scrubs at a glance
| On a TV set | In a real hospital | |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks the color | Costume department | Employer, or a national scheme the employer adopts |
| What the color signals | Character and look on camera | Role, so patients can tell who is who |
| Rules on washing | None that apply to viewers | Employer policy, care label, and in the UK NHS guidance |
| Fabric | Not published for the show | Mostly polyester, rayon and spandex blends; some cotton-rich |
| Changing at work | Not relevant | NHS England asks staff to change at work or cover up when traveling |
If the revival has you shopping for scrubs, remember that what looks good on screen may not match your employer's dress code or laundry rules.
What to check before you act
- Check ABC's or Hulu's listings for current broadcast and streaming times.
- Ask your employer for its written dress code before buying scrubs in any color.
- If you work in the NHS, check whether your trust has adopted the national uniform and any local variations.
- Read the fabric composition and care label, not just the color.
- Check the wash temperature on the label against your employer's laundry rules.
